Generation No. 9

139.  WILLIAM DAVID9 HEMBREE (JOHN8, ISAAC7, DREWRY C.6, WILLIAM5 EMORY, WILLIAM (JR.)4 HEMBREE, WILLIAM (SR.)3, ISACC2, HENRY1) was born October 16, 1845 in Martin County, Indiana, and died July 28, 1922 in at his home in New Market.  He married (1) MARGERY A. HANKINS November 1867.  He married (2) MARTHA DOUGHERTY January 11, 1893.  He married (3) PHOEBE E. MEAD October 16, 1918.

Notes for WILLIAM DAVID HEMBREE:

Age at death: Died at age 76

William served in the Civil War and then came to Iowa.

Below is what his obituary said:

OLD SETTLER GONE

On Friday, July 28, shortly before noon the spirit of Wm. Hembree returned to Him who gave it.  Mr. Hembree had been in poor health for sometime but his illness did not become alarming until some two weeks before his demise.  Medical skill and loving hands could not thwart the grim destroyer, and death came as stated above.

Mr. Hembree had been a resident of this community for more than fifty years, and he was esteemed and respected by all who knew him.  He was a good citizen, and in his dealings with his fellow men he believed in following the Golden Rule.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon in the Baptist church, conducted by Revs. Field and J. Owen Smith.  Plumb Masonic Lodge of Siam, of which the deceased was an honored member, were in charge.  Interment was in Memory Cemetery.

William David Hembree, eldest son of John and Martha Hembree, was born in Martin County, Indiana, October 16, 1845, where he lived until 5 years old when with his parents he moved near Haysville, Indiana, where he resided until he enlisted in the Civil War in October, 1863 in the 95th Regt. Ind. Vol. Inf.  He reenlisted January, 1865, in the 143rd Regt. Ind. Vol. Inf., and served until the end of the war.  In 1866 with his Uncle, Frank Cavender and family, he came to Taylor County, Iowa, and made his home here ever since.  In November, 1867, he married Marjory Hankins.  To this union were born 7 children, 2 boys and 5 girls, one daughter died in infancy and the oldest son died when 18 years of age.  His wife died September 11, 1886.

He was united in matrimony January 11, 1893, to Martha Dougherty, and moved to New Market in November, 1912.  His wife passed to eternity February 28, 1916.

On October 16, 1918, he married Phebe E. Mead, who survives him.

In young manhood William Hembree confessed faith in Christ.  On his visit while home from the army on a furlough he was taken very sick and promised God that if He would spare his life he would serve Him as long as he lived.  He recovered from his sickness, returned to the war and like some others under similar circumstances forgot his vow.

While living 5 miles south of New Market he walked to Boundary Grove, now known as Kraut Trestle, to attend a Methodist Camp meeting.  The text of the evening was, "Pay thy vow to the most High".  Wm. Hembree remembered his vow and gave his heart to God and kept the faith to the end.  His parents were Presbyterians, but after careful study he united with the Baptist Church.  He was a member of the Upton Post G. A. R.  He was also a member of Plumb Lodge A. F. & A. M. of Siam.

He departed this life at his late home in New Market, July 28, 1922, aged 76 years, 9 months and 12 days.  He leaves to mourn their loss his wife and 5 children as follows:  Rosa Hembree Hutchinson, Martha Hembree Farlow, Vina Hembree Snodgrass all of New Market; Frank Hembree of Council Bluffs, Dolla Hembree Lindsey of Clatscaney, Oregon, 13 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren, 2 brothers and 4 sisters of Indiana, also 2 brothers and 1 sister of Oklahoma.

An incident from the old home:  When leaving for the west his father took his hand and said, "William, we have tried to teach you honesty, sobriety and industry and now son you are going out from among us and I want you to remember what we have taught you and be a man".  In speaking of this incident lately Bro. Hembree remarked, how much that word "man" has meant to me.

He held the office of deacon and trustee for many years in this church and for a time was a teacher of the Bible class.

The out of town relatives and friends who attended the funeral of Wm Hembree are:  Marion Burriss, Alfordsville, Ind., Mrs. Emoral Canary and daughter, Mrs. Walter Price, Loogootee, Ind., Mr. & Mrs. Ed Smith, Bedford, Iowa, Mrs. Jonas Fuller, Braddyville, Iowa,  Mr. & Mrs. Tom Hazelton, and Mrs. Louis Abbott, Clarinda, Iowa, Mr. & Mrs. Ernest Thompson and son, Merrill of Hepburn, Iowa, Mr. & Mrs. Ed Cavender, Shenadoah, Iowa, Mr. & Mrs. Frank Hembree and son of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Wilse Cavender, Plattsmouth, Nebraska, and some others we failed to get the names.

Notes for PHOEBIA CATHERINE HEMBREE:

The information below was sent to me on the Hembree Family Tree (Genealogy Site) at http://pages.ivillage.com/fp-olevia/

Phoebia Catherine Hembree is the daughter of Andrew Jackson Hembree and Catherine Andrews , she was born circa 1854 in Indiana (probably Dubois County). She died about 1880 probably either in Carroll County, Arkansas or Barry County, Missouri (the family moved back and forth between these two counties), while her son John was an infant. Family story is that after doing the family laundry she said she was extremely tired and laid down on the bed and passed away while nursing John.

Phoebia was named after Andrew's mother (Phoebe) and her own mother (Catherine).

Notes for JOEL R. BURTON:

John died either 1917 or 1938.

Notes for SARAH ELLEN BURTON:

The following information was given to me be Deana Hembree:

In June 1967: Sarah Ellen Burton Mahorney was 90 years old and although she was frail in body and could not remember dates, her memory seemed to be fresh and accurate.

Sarah Ellen Burton Mahorney (my great grandmother) told her granddaughter, Winifred Rodgers Hembree (my mother) and my self that her mother died shortly after John's birth. She didn't know when he was born nor how old he was when he died, she said she was between 4 to 8 when her mother (Phoebia) died. The family story is that Phoebia had finished the family's weekly laundry and stated that she was very tired. She went and laid on the bed and nursed John. Joel became concerned that she had been laying down for a long period of time so he went in to check on her and found her dead.

She also stated that her father, Joel R. Burton, died in Oklahoma but could not recall where nor when. She did state that his grave had been moved because of a water project. One Burton researcher lists his death date as 1917 and another as 1938 but neither had proof.

"HEMBREE, E..  Funeral Services here with interment at Huntsville. E (Ezekiel) HEMBREE. one of Scott counties well-known citizens, died in Knoxville last Saturday morning and his remains were brought here for burial Monday.  Mr. Hembree had been feeling as well as usual the day before his death and, according to information, his family did not see anything wrong with him upon retiring the night before his death.  We understand that he awoke early Saturday morning and spoke of getting up but did not arise at that time.  Mrs. Hembree, a few minutes later, noticed something wrong and called members of the family from another room and he only lived a few minutes, never speaking before his death. Mr. Hembree was born and reared in this county and has spent practically all of his life here.  He was 69 years of age, had been twice married, first to Miss Celia GOAD and later to Miss Belle PHILLIPS. to which were born ten children, six of whom preceded him to the grave.  He served as County Trustee for eight years; was a member of the Baptist Church, joining the Huntsville church in 1893, later moving his membership to the church at Smoky;  also a member of the I.O.O.F. and K. P. Lodges.  For the past 14 years Mr. and Mrs. Hembree and family had lived in Oneida; running the Commercial Hotel here until six or seven weeks ago when they sold out and moved to Knoxville where they were making their home at the time of his death.  Funeral services were held at the First Baptist Church Monday afternoon with Rev. George Cecil and Rev. T. H. Roark officiating.  The large crowd and the many beautiful floral offerings were evidence of the esteem in which he was held by the people of Oneida and the County.  Interment was in the Huntsville Cemetery with H.J. Lippert in charge of arrangements.  The Odd Fellows Lodge had charge of the services at the cemetery.  Hon. Lindsay B. Phillips, U. S. District Attorney for the western district of Tennessee, who is the brother of Mrs. Hembree, was practically reared by Mr. and Mrs. Hembree and almost as a son.  Mr. Hembree is survived by his widow, four children:  Mrs. Maud Beatty of Oneida; Miss Vina, Dewey and Herbert of Knoxville; three sisters, Mrs. R.M. Keathly of New River and Mrs. Phillip Lowe and Mrs. Alex Lowe of this county, also three grandchildren, Celia, Howard and Baby Maud Hamlin of Oneida besides a host of relatives and friends in all Scott County."

Notes for MARY JANE HEMBREE:

Mary Jane was born July 24, 1913 in Atoka, Atoka Co., Oklahoma to Jim Hembree (1880-1965) and Mary Magdalene Lowe Hembree (1883-1964), the 7th child of 13. She grew up around Farris, Oklahoma. She is listed in the 1920 Atoka, Co., OK. Federal Census. She only went to school until the 5th grade, she was needed more at home, so she never got much education. At the age of 17 & 10 months, she married Roland Ashley Standifer (1915-1979) on May 15, 1932 in Atoka, Ok.. They set up home in Farris, near their parents, with Roland working as a farm hand and Jane keeping house. Their first child, Inez was born at home in Farris on St. Patrick's Day, Mar. 17, 1934. Three months after Inez's birth, Roland went to New Mexico looking for work. In Sept. Jane and Inez joined Roland in Roswell, New Mexico, where they settled until 1942 when the family moved west. The 2nd child, Fred Dean was born Jan. 28, 1937 in Farris, Ok. in the same house that Inez was born in, while the family was visiting for Christmas. Eighteen months later the 3rd child, Dale Edward was born on July 25, 1938 at home in Roswell, NM. Dale was a birthday present for Mary Jane being born the day after her 25th birthday. The 4th child, James Ashley was born at home on the night of the 3rd and 4th day of March, 1940. He arrived before the Doctor did and he put the 4th of Mar. as the birth date, but James was probably born on the 3rd day of Mar in Roswell, NM. James died April 29, 1996 and is buried in Greenlawn Cemetery, Farmington, San Juan Co., NM. The family relocated west to California in 1942, because of health problems with Roland. In California, Jane & Roland worked on farms until Roland went to work for Shell Oil Co. in Coalinga, CA.. Mary Jane worked in a Family Restaurant in Coalinga for a while and then picked cotton to help out. She saved enough money so that the family was able to go to Oklahoma for a vacation to see her parents for the first time since 1937. Betty Jane (1943-1979) was the last child, born in Coalinga, Fresno Co., CA. She died 50 days after Roland did in 1979; She was cremated and her ashes are buried in Valier Cemetery, Velier, MT. Mary Jane moved with Roland, while he worked in the oilfields of New Mexico, Colorado, Utah and California for 30 years, and eventually they returned to Bakersfield, Ca. Where Roland retired from Shell Oil Co.. He died in 1979 an is buried in Hillcrest Memorial Park and Cemetery, in Bakersfield, CA. Mary Jane has lived in Bakersfield, with her son, Dale. She has 3 children still living, Inez, Fred and Dale. She has 12 grandchildren, and 16 Great Grandchildren. She has 1 brother, Harmon Hembree in Oklahoma City and 1 sister, Fannie (Jimmy) Bowman in Comanche, OK. still living.
