"Jim Hembree
was an exceptional man...so was Cressie. Jim enlisted in the army of the Confederacy,
Company " F " 16th North Carolina Regiment and later transferred to Company B of the same regiment formed in Buncombe County,
North Carolina. James fought in 15 major battles including Gettysburg. During the battle at Gettysburg Jim was injured and transferred to David's Island, New York as a prisoner
of war. He lost his lower right leg on July 22, 1863. After the Civil War Jim and Cressie moved to Aubrey, Hunt County, Texas.
He road the circuit teaching children for 40 years". "James and Cressie
owned a sandy farm, where they grew cotton, corn and watermelons. They would
eat the watermelons in the field. When asked which side he fought with in the
Civil War, James would reply, I wore the gray. I also remember our Fore Grandparents,
Lewis (Louis) and Sarah, they lived near us in Texas and are interred in Texas along with their daughter, Cressie. I became ill with pneumonia at the age of nine and remembered Grandma Creesie was the kind of person that
came to your house with her apron full of medicine and never left until you were well again, as in my case, however, Grandma
Cressie contracted pneumonia and died. Soon after the loss of his wife, James
returned to Cherokee County, N.C. and lived with his son, George until he died.

m. DORA EMMA JACKSON.

iv. MARY HEMBREE, b. 1871.
Notes for MARY HEMBREE:
Mary wasn't included on some of the records I found on the internet. That
leads me to think she may be adopted, or just a relative taken in.
v. GEORGE W. HEMBREE, b. 1873, Kentucky.
vi. MARGARET HEMBREE, b. 1876, Kentucky.
110. EZEKIEL8 HEMBREE (JOHN7, JOHN (JR.)6, JOHN (SR.)5, WILLIAM (JR.)4, WILLIAM (SR.)3, ISACC2, HENRY1) was born September 24, 1848 in
Knox County, Kentucky, and died July 16, 1927 in Knox County, Kentucky. He married
FRANCIS OWENS July 07, 1870
in Knox County, Kentucky.
Notes for EZEKIEL HEMBREE:
I got the dates of his birth and death off his tombstone at a Cemetery in
Brush Creek; Knox County, Kentucky. James Bradley (J.B.) Hembree thought the name of the Cemetery was Tinsley Bridge Cemetery.
Marriage license says his birth date is July 10, 1848. Marriage certificate
has him listed as Ezekiel Hembree, Jr.
In the 1850 Knox County Census, Ezekiel is listed as 3 years of age so it
would seem that he may have been born in 1847; his death certificate says his birth date is September 24, 1820. I believe that is an error.
The 1900 census for Knox Co. KY. It
is as follows:
Hembree, Ezekiel 52 b. KY 7/1847 {his death certificate says he was born in September instead of July}
m. Feriba (probably nickname for Francis) 44 b. KY 2/1856 {her tombstone gives
her birth date as February 16, 1846}.
Isaac F. 18 b. KY 7/1881,
John M. 17 b. KY 2/1883,
Merica E. [possibly America Ellen] 14 b. KY 9/1885, {Could this be Mary?}
Steven D. 13 b. KY 11/1886,
Oliver A.C. 12 b. KY 1/1888,
Joe A. 10 b. KY 11/1889, {This
must be a mis-print or someone that isn't one of Ezekiel's children. Ezekiel's sons name was Joseph Cephus and his tombstone
has his birth date as September 24, 1848}.
Andrew 9 b. KY 5/1891.
I was told that Ezekiel had 13 children, no one knows who Oliver is, so he
may not be one of Ezekiel’s children.
Knox Co. Marriage Book BB & C:
Hembree, Ezekiel to Owens, Francis 7/7/1880
both born in Knox Co. KY. It also stated both of Ezekiel's parents were born in Knox County. Francis' parent's birthplaces
were unknown. Certificate from bride's grandfather who raised her. Principal and surety: Ezekiel Hembree & John W. Baker.
Cause of Death: Paralysis; he had no Doctor
Notes for FRANCIS OWENS:
Alias: Feriba (probably nickname for Francis)
I got the dates of her birth and death off her tombstone at a Cemetery in
Brush Creek; Knox County, Kentucky. James Bradley (J.B.) Hembree thinks the name of the Cemetery is Tinsley Bridge Cemetery.
Francis was raised by her grandfather.
